Cowboy boots have to be just about the most iconic example of footwear, ever. They are also extremely comfortable for pedestrian transportation and serve purposes practical for life on the range or floating around the dance floor. I can say from experience however, they are under no circumstances built for walking on icy sidewalks.
That said, I acquired my first and only pair whilst living in snowy Aspen, CO & I must say they are a great addition to any wardrobe in an ol' West silver mining town! In the spring of 2003 I moved in to my apartment at Truscott Place (now inhabited by my good friend Brandon) and was in need of my first home furnishings. Along with the car-full of Ikea's best space-saving pieces, my Dad arrived with my blue cowboy boots with big gold butterflies (second only to the package of Hormel salami from a supermarket in Cartersville, GA, and easily trumping my first 'personal' gift from my Dad, an over-sized Minnie Mouse t from EuroDisney). Dad had taken Mum out shopping to try them on and make sure he got the size right, but I was impressed, the idea had been his.
What a great idea! Not only was it practical to have a pair of comfy, stylie boots; I could also fit in at Gilly's and the upcoming Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo. When I moved to Aspen in October 2002, and realized Cheyenne was only a five hour drive away, I bought two tickets to Frontier Days in hopes I'd have the time to go and someone to go with. George Strait could "Still Make Cheyenne," a Garth Brooks lover walked the "Beaches of Cheyenne," he'd also made a call from "a phonebooth in Cheyenne" and I was pretty excited to get the chance to go see the country hotspot for myself. Court pulled through, as usual, and our dream of following the rodeo was underway! So we danced, camped, and attended the rodeo, no one any the wiser that we were wearing only our first pairs of boots.
After Cheyenne we hit rodeos in Colorado Springs, Las Vegas, Reno, Snowmass Village, Glenwood Springs and Greeley (together & solo). Country concerts were also a great source of amusement, both for the valuable people watching and of course the music.
Recently, my boots and I took my mum to see Garth Brooks, another icon; I think now, together, my boots & I have come full circle & destiny has been fulfilled.
How have I missed that you have a blog?! Love it!
Whenever I hear the song "Callin' Baton Rouge" I always think of you. Love that Garth.
